Police are on the hunt for a man who allegedly robbed a security truck at gunpoint in the Bay of Plenty.

The aggravated robbery of security staff refilling cash from a security truck at the ATM on Onlsow Street, Kawerau, was reported to police at about 8.45am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson says the security staff were confronted by a man with a firearm, who stole a quantity of cash.

The alleged offender left in a maroon coloured Nissan Maxima.

"Police have spoken to a number of witnesses but we're aware there may be other people with information who we have not yet been able to speak to us," says Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson.

"We'd like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time and who witnessed the robbery or may have seen the maroon coloured Nissan Maxima vehicle.

"If anyone recognises this vehicle or knows who may be driving this vehicle they are encouraged to contact us.

"We also want to hear from anyone with dashcam footage from that area around that time, from the vicinity of 81-83 Onslow Street this morning between 8.30am and 9am."

Another gun crime.

We need mandatory jail terms for criminal use of guns, as I mentioned elsewhere. In this case he would be down for 2 years, just for presenting a gun, before any other considerations...on the scale of mandatory jail terms I proposed. We either get serious about illegal use of firearms or we just surrender our communities to the gangs and criminals.

Until the term “concurrent” is removed from the justice system, not a lot is going to change…
