Reports of anti-social behaviour at a poplar carpark in Pilot Bay has promoted Tauranga City Council to install a barrier to prevent nightly access.
The Pilot Bay carpark is an entrance way to Mauao and the convenient sport for boaties to park up for a day on the water.
It also sits next to one of the country's most sought after holiday destinations, the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park.
Recently, anti-social behaviour taking place in the carpark has lead to reported issues of loud noise and people congregating late into the night, says a statement from Tauranga City Council.
To improve safety and mitigate the issue, a barrier will be installed at the entrance to the top carpark.
The top carpark will be closed between 7pm and 5am, Monday to Sunday.
The hours of operation will come into effect after daylight saving on Monday, September 26.
The boat ramp and lower carpark will remain open 24/7.
Council's spaces and places manager Sarah Pearce says the behaviour taking place is unacceptable.
"Pilot Bay is a hub for family friendly activities and a place where people can enjoy the seaside and moana throughout the year.
"I'm sure the community will agree that we want to keep it that way."
Pilot Bay, a holiday hot spot and family friendly area.
The Pilot Bay boat ramp is one of seven public boat ramps in the city.
There is no charge to launch boats at any of the boat ramps and bookings aren't required.
For more information on boating facilities across the city, visit council's website.
The area will be monitored to see the impact this closure has on safety in the area.

I've noticed the park-ups for a while which aren't ideal especially with a lot of families/kids walking past.
While they're at it

The council needs to get back to ticketing those cars that are illegally parked in the carpark with no boat trailers attached.i have phoned council previously and been told that they have cameras operating but if that's the case then why do they have to put up barriers? Council just don't want to do the job they are payed to do .
goodness no
