Discovery class at Whakamarama School

A new discovery classroom based on child-directed learning is being set up at Whakamarama School.

The class will provide an alternative learning environment to foster the development of innovative thinking processes – tools identified by current education researchers as being critical to lifelong success.

Each child in the class will have an individual learning plan based on the child's interests, needs and learning style, with New Zealand curriculum subjects woven in and around the child's passions.

Whakamarama School Board of Trustees chairperson Denelle Croucher says the class, based on a learning model used in the Discovery One School in Christchurch, is a point of difference for the school.

'Our philosophy and values are closely aligned with the Discovery One School and this new class is an extension of this. The learning model may appeal to those who are considering home schooling or seeking an alternative learning style that extends the type of learning already adopted in many early childhood environments such as play centre and some kindergartens.”

Whakamarama School has no zoning restrictions, which enables anyone from the Tauranga district to participate in the state funded, alternative learning environment, says Denelle.

'We are in a position where we can grow the school roll and utilise a currently vacant classroom to set this class up.”

The class will cater from new entrants through to year eight with an individual learning plan set for each student in conjunction with the child, parents and teacher, but with a reporting system that ensures National Standards criteria are met.

Any parent interested is welcome to attend a public meeting at the Whakamarama Hall opposite Whakamarama School on Thursday, August 30 at 6:30 pm.

For more information phone the school on 552 5204 or email office@whakamarama.school.co.nz

So...?

Take a look at the Discovery 1 internet site (http://www.discovery1.school.nz) and anyone with knowledge of our public education system will see that all schools subscribe to the tenets that are touted by Discovery 1 and Whakamarama. All NZ schools and teachers strive to achieve the very best for their students and students are given every opportunity to be the best that they can be. The label "Discovery" is rather misleading as it pertains to this school. Discovery and Child-centred learning has been with us for decades, so there is nothing new here. Have a look at the NZ Curriculum and Discovery 1 tenets/principles and you will see that they line up with the curriculum document. Essentially the only major difference with this school is smaller class size and we know that all teachers would love smaller classes. So I do not know what the hype is all about!

Child-directed learning

It's a very different premise for learning. Yes, we have had child-centred learning for decades. This embarks on child-directed learning. Something that has been tried and tested in various places around the world with remarkable "results". I recommend reading "Democratic Education - A beginning of a Story" by Yaacov Hecht. Also google Sir Ken Robinson on Ted Talks. Democratic education whether regarded as old, or new or whatever is on the rise. It's really about progressive systems for a changing world and a deeper respect for human freedoms. The hype is well worth a look! Best wishes, Rae
