UPDATE 3.25pm: State Highway 30 is now open following a multiple vehicle crash on the intersection of Thornton Rd and SH 30 in Awakeri, Whakatāne district.

A police spokesperson says they were advised of the multiple vehicle collision at 2.30pm.

"It appears there may be injuries," says the police spokesperson.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says the highway is now open.

Earlier 2.50pm: Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says the highway is closed in both directions at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway.

"Avoid te area if possible or follow directions of emergency services and expect delays."
