Update, 7.11pm: Three people have died following the earlier crash on State Highway 29, Matamata this evening, say police.
Police were notified of the crash shortly after 5.30pm.
"There are no other reported injuries at this time," says a police spokesperson.
The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene.
The road expected to remain closed for several more hours.
Diversions are in place, and motorists are asked to avoid the area and expect delays.
Earlier 5.58pm: State Highway 29 is closed following a serious crash involving two vehicles in Matamata, Waikato, reported to Police shortly after 5.30pm.
"Emergency services are in attendance, and there are injuries reported," says a police spokesperson.
"Diversions are in place, motorists are asked to avoid the area and expect delays."

fines for driving below the speed limit should be as harsh as fines for speeding. People that drive 20km or more below a posted limit without letting people pass are as bad as speeding with bald tyres. Slower doesnt always mean safer, if youre traveling from somewhere with a lower speed limit doesnt matter if youre in a 100-110km zone. Harsher fines for not indicating and following simple road rules, allow no foreign licenses and remove all the stupid tax wasting roadsigns that say "keep your eyes on the road" if you werent doing that already youre at everyones behest just a liability and need to move off the road and sort it out.
