SunLive readers have noted that Wakaari/White Island appears to be giving off a larger plume than usual today.

"White Island chucking ash all morning," wrote one reader.

GeoNet has one camera on the island which is functioning - the Whakaari/White Island Crater Rim camera, as well as another functioning camera at Whakatane.

The Whakaari/White Island Crater Floor and West Rim cameras have ceased functioning.

"Our duty teams have observed the plume coming from Whakaari," says volcanic duty officer Mike Rosenberg.

Mike says the plume is not uncommon activity.

"The high plume is the result of weak ashing from a vent and high winds," says Mike.

"While this is not of concern, our teams will continue to monitor as usual."

Whakaari/White Island is currently at Volcanic Alert Level 2, which means there is moderate to heightened volcanic unrest. The alert level was raised on September 7 due to loss of real-time monitoring capability and increased uncertainty.
