Police are investigating after a woman was left with a serious gunshot wound near Rotorua overnight.

Police say the incident on State Highway 33 in Mourea happened about 1.55am on Sunday morning.

"When officers arrived they found a woman seriously injured," says a police spokesperson.

There is an increased police presence in the area while officers make enquiries.

No arrests have been made yet.
