Flooding has caused the closure of State Highway 2 at Pukehina.

"SH2 is closed at the Kaikokopu Bridge at Pukehina due to a 100m stretch of flooding," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

"While the flooding is not deep – NZ Police have requested the closure due to safety."

NZTA say there is no timeframe yet for when SH2 at Pukehina will re-open as the river is extremely high and posing a risk.

Detour for both directions is via read Wilson Road, Old Coach Road and Pukehina Station Road.

Road closure: SH 2 Matata to (SH33) Paengaroa

Due to flooding, SH2 is also closed between Pukehina Station Rd and Wilson Rd South, in both directions.

A detour is in place. Eastbound traffic use Wilson Rd South, Old Coach Rd and Maniatutu Rd. Reverse for Westbound traffic.

Motorists are advised to follow the detour and allow at least an extra 15 minutes travel time.

"Driving conditions may be hazardous so please only drive if essential. If you must head out, please take extra care when driving, watch for hazards, adjust your speed and check the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website before heading off for information on which routes are affected by recent bad weather," says an NZTA spokesperson.

"We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

"Waka Kotahi thanks everyone for their patience and understanding while we work to re-open roads in the region."

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
