Opal Drive to close for one week

From today, October 3, work to install the section of the Opal Drive Rising Main upgrade under the road will begin.

This work will require a road closure from 7am Monday 3 October.

'The relatively narrow road width would make it very challenging to have one lane open while we construct the pipeline in the other lane,” says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

'By installing the pipe in one singular length with a road closure, we will avoid having to weld two pieces of pipe together in the centre of the road. This reduces the risk of future road closures to carry out maintenance on this piece of pipeline.

'We can get the pipe installation completed quicker with a full road closure, which will reduce the overall disruption from these works.

'While the road is closed, traffic will be redirected towards either Domain Road or Longview Drive.

'Residents along the work zone will maintain vehicle access to their properties, but will need to exit from their side of the road closure.

'Access via footpaths will be kept open at all times for pedestrians.

'We appreciate your continued patience with these works, we understand this can be trying, however this work is an essential component of the wastewater pipes upgrade. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes you,” says the spokesperson.

The installation is expected to take one week (weather permitting). The spokesperson says TCC needs to close the road access for the following reasons:

  • The relatively narrow road width would make it very challenging to have one lane open while we construct the pipeline in the other lane.
  • By installing the pipe in one singular length with a road closure, we will avoid having to weld two pieces of pipe together in the centre of the road. This reduces the risk of future road closures to carry out maintenance on this piece of pipeline.
  • We can get the pipe installation completed quicker with a full road closure, which will reduce the overall disruption from these works.
