State Highway 35 has re-opened on Tuesday afternoon after a series of slips closed the road between Opotiki and Cape Runaway on Saturday morning.

"Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors have worked tirelessly to clear around 25 slips affecting this stretch of road," says an NZTA spokesperson.

"Three crews were back this morning making the most of the improving weather conditions, and have achieved clearing a significant amount of slip material to get both lanes open, earlier than expected."

Road users are still advised to take care as some residual mud and debris may remain on the road, especially on the shoulders.

Traffic management remains in place for a short section of the highway north of the Motu River mouth at the site where the road partially fell into the river in mid-July.

Around the region all other state highways are now open, with both lanes re-opening on State Highway 5 Rotorua to Waiotapu this morning.

"Waka Kotahi thanks everyone for their patience and understanding as we worked to re-open and repair roads affected by wet weather around the region."

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey.
