Huge traffic delays on SH2

Frustrated motorists are reporting large traffic delays on State Highway 2, through the Karangahake Gorge.

One caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says it has taken them an hour just to get three quarters of the way through the gorge.

"It's just crawling.

"There is so much traffic."

NZTA is reporting that there is a broken down truck causing delays in the gorge.

The truck is blocking one lane of the highway, east of School Road.

Stop/go traffic management is in place.

Meanwhile, SH29 remains closed following a serious crash earlier this morning.

SunLive is working on getting updated information about this crash and will provide an update when we can.

Trapped in Tauranga

There are only two ways north out of Tauranga. Clearly, we need a better solution. A tunnel through the Kaimai would be perfect. this would have minimal bends, be properly lit and not subject to the problems of weather. But cycle lanes clearly take priority in the minds of the holy.

Alternative route

I travelled STHWY Tauriko 29 to 24 then27. If you travel to STHWY 1 from 29 it is not only faster than the waihi route but far better road and no hold ups. The No1 STHWY is 110 K/hour.
