Waihi Beach to launch new summer kick-off festival

The festival will be held at Anzac Bay/Waipaopao.

A new summer festival is heading to Waihi Beach this November.

This festival will be held at Anzac Bay/Waipaopao on Saturday, November 19, from 2-6pm.

Anzac Bay is a unique and significant location.

The festival looks to embrace both the natural setting and cultural history of this site and create a wonderful day out for friends and family.

'As locals and visitors to Waihi Beach are drawn to the beach, we have always dreamed of holding a festival that is situated on the water which celebrates our local area,” says Waihi Beach Events and Promotions events manager Vicki Lambert.

'And with the holidays just around the corner, this festival will kick-off the season kiwis love most – summer.”

Working closely with Otawhiwhi Marae and Waihi Beach School, the festival line-up consists of live music, food trucks, children's workshops, festival face art, as well as cultural story telling.

'We are grateful to Te Whānau ā Tauwhao of Otawhiwhi, who have offered to share their stories of Anzac Bay/Waipaopao.

'The collaboration between Waihi Beach Events & Promotions and Te Whānau ā Tauwhao enables the community and visitors to come together in a significant spot here at Waipaopao, to learn more of the history and celebrate the start of the summer season,” says Reon Tuanau of Otawhiwhi Marae.

'The kaupapa around this event is so positive, we can learn from our past and encourage our tamariki to care for our whenua for the future.”

The awesome line-up of live music from Looking for Alaska, Sarah Spicer, Matty Buxton & Regan Perry will liven up the afternoon. The audience can also expect a guest appearance by Liam Ryan (of The Narcs).

The festival is being supported by local and regional sponsors.
