The centre of the country was rattled by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake just after 3am.

The quake was centred just north of French Pass at the top of the South Island, and was 146 kilometres deep.

Reports on Geonet show the quake mostly jolted the upper South and lower North Island, but there are reports of it being felt by people as far away as Auckland.
