Eastern Bay of Plenty thriller

With the Peace Cup (Challenge Trophy) also on the line in the Stan Meads Cup match-up in the Eastern Bay of Plenty on Sunday afternoon – the scene was set for an absolute thriller, between current Stan Meads titleholders Te Awamutu and Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Two willing combatants turned the encounter, played under brilliant winter conditions, into a thriller that went down to the final whistle.


While the home side forwards were dominant for much of the encounter, the Te Awamutu Fijian contingent were the difference, in the encounter taken out 26-24 by the visitors.

Te Awamutu flyer Makade Pesenimo made the match his own running in three touchdowns, with Sekobi Sereki grabbing a try, to give the defending champions an additional bonus point.

The Eastern Bay points came from tries to Te Amo Wilbore and Wesley Hall with Wilbore adding four penalties and a conversion.

The other Sunday match between Piako and Western Bay of Plenty, who took unbeaten records into the game, was taken out four tries to two by the Waikato based side.

Piako led 21-6 at the half way break courtesy of three tries and added a bonus point fourth touchdown in the second spell, to take home a 34-20 victory.

Hamilton were made to fight for victory against King Country B at Te Kuiti on Saturday. With 10 minutes to go, the King Country representatives led 20-10, however, Hamilton ran in three tries in quick succession to take pout the match 30-20.

Ox Sanerivi, Matt Sergent, Wyn Masters, and James Loho touched down the Hamilton tries with Loho adding two penalties and two conversions.

Central Bay posted a solid 36-21 win over a game Thames Valley B at the Ngongotaha Domain.

Joe Nuku, Beau Kiel, Darren Haumaha, William Collier, Hamuera Hudson and Jason Puddles ran in the Central tries with Matt Spiers dotting down twice with Joe Ferguson grabbing the Valleys third touchdown.
