SH25 now open, Waimana Gorge still closed

Update, 6.15pm: The slip on State Highway 25 has been cleared and the road is open once again.

State Highway 2 between Awakeri and Opotiki in the Waimana Gorge is closed due to a slip. A detour is in place.

Detour Route: Westbound traffic: turn left onto Paerata Ridge Rd, turn right onto Verrall Rd and right onto Waiotahi Valley Back Rd to rejoin SH2. Eastbound traffic: in reverse. This detour is not suitable for heavy vehicles.

Earlier, 10am: Severe weather on Friday has resulted in two slips closing main highways in the Coromandel and eastern Bay of Plenty regions.

Due to a slip State Highway 25 in the Coromandel peninsula is closed in both directions between Kūaotunu and Wharekaho.

"Please delay your journey if possible as there is no detour available in this area," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.
