Bay of Plenty has put smiles on several of its local supporter's faces by getting off to the perfect start at New Zealand Men's Interprovincials.
The hosts played at Omanu on Tuesday and got past Aorangi 4 – 1 in the morning before edging a strong Wellington outfit 3 – 2 in the afternoon.
They sit atop Division One with two match wins and seven individual game wins, ahead of Manawatu Wanganui.
Not a single game went down the final hole against Aorangi in their opening match. Jordan Golding lost 2&1 to Cameron Grant, but the BOP bounced back with their top four all recording victories.
Number four, Hayden White won 2&1, Nathan Clark won 3&2 at number three, Shaun Campbell returned from his US studies and won 6&5, while two-time New Zealand Amateur finalist Mitchell Kale won 4&3 at number one.
It was the perfect start as they faced a challenging Wellington this afternoon, who was yet to have any game time as they had their bye this morning.
White, Campbell, and Kale finished with back-to-back wins to get Bay of Plenty the all-important three points needed to secure a team win. White won 2up, and Campbell and Kale won 2&1 to topple the capital city, which has three of their Freyberg Masters stars in the starting line-up this week.
Poverty Bay East Coast are the early tournament storyline, sitting second in Division One after a narrow 3 – 2 loss to Manawatu Wanganui and a 4 – 1 victory over a young North Harbour team.
They sit a game point ahead of Manawatu Wanganui on the ladder.
No one has taken the early ascendency in the tough second division.
Taranaki and Waikato both had recorded a win and a loss to start their campaigns. The defending champions got pipped by Waikato 3.5 – 1.5 this morning but bounced back against Southland this afternoon 4 – 1. They've accumulated 5.5 game points alongside Waikato, who lost to Hawke's Bay 3 – 2 this afternoon after their impressive win earlier.
The men are playing at Tauranga Golf Club today. Play got underway at 7.30am.
