Police say a person has been taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition following an incident in Pilot Bay on Christmas Day.

"Last night at about 9.35pm, Police received a report of a water related incident near Salisbury Avenue/The Mall, Mount Maunganui,' says a Police spokesperson.

A SunLive reader reports seeing emergency services at the wharf, at around 10pm on Sunday, when driving home from a Christmas Day celebration.

"Last night when we were leaving Pilot Bay there was a fire truck and ambulance in the car park by Salisbury Whart," says the SunLive reader.

"There had been a lot of kids and teenagers jumping off the wharf and my hubby and daughter-in-law saw them doing it, and one boy was having a bit of trouble getting back to shore or the wharf."

Police say that one person was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

SunLive will update this as more information comes to hand.
