No peaceful meeting in cup match

This Saturday the Peace Cup will be on the line for the last time this season when Western Bay of Plenty challenges undefeated titleholders Te Awamutu.

Defending Stan Meads Cup champions Te Awamutu cruised into the 2012 semi-finals, defeating Thames Valley B at the Paeroa Domain.

The current titleholders retain the Peace Cup (Challenge trophy). The Waikato teams' undefeated record in the 2012 Stan Meads Cup, set up a sudden death encounter with Western Bay of Plenty next Saturday in Te Awamutu. To give the match-up an extra edge the Peace Cup will be on the line for the final time this season.

Eastern Bay of Plenty won the Bay sub-union local derby, when they defeated Central Bay 31-17 at Emery Park on the outskirts of Rotorua. Also at stake in the semi-final eliminator was the Bay of Plenty Rugby sub-union prize of the Te Hurinui Apanui Shield.

Piako finished as the top qualifier in section two, when they won a battle of attrition with Hamilton posting a 31-22 win.

In a game that was up for grabs throughout, Piako posted an unbeaten record in section two, to set up a date with Eastern Bay of Plenty next weekend. The Hamilton points came from a try apiece to Joe Shears, Winasoni Qiquiwaqa and James Lotto with James kicking two penalties and a conversion

There was a nervous wait for the Western Bay team after they defeated King Country B in Tauranga. A phone call to Hamilton confirmed that Piako had relegated Hamilton to the Bowl division, which gave the Bay side a pass to the Stan Meads Cup semi-finals.

While Western Bay eventually posted a 33-10 win, the visitors gave the home side plenty to think about in the first half, with Western Bay taking a narrow 14-10 advantage into the break in play.

The Western Bay tries were scored by Tukaha Carter, Keepa Mewitt, Sasu Wihape, Richard Nauer and Alex Jessop, with Nauer dotting the ball down for his fifth try of the 2012 Stan Meads Cup.
