A boat is being washed ashore today after in Whangamata after it capsized this morning.

"Coastguard recieved a call at around 6.30am from the vessel's occupants saying they had capsized on the bar, but had made it safely back to shore," a Coastguard spokesperson says.

"Coastguard then passed this information onto Surf Lifesaving and other emergency services to organise salvage as the vessel was being washed in with the tide."

According to the Coromandel CFM Facebook page, two jet skis following the boat recovered the three people on board.

"The boat has now washed up on the beach and is the responsibility of the Harbour Master to arrange the removal," says the post.

Why is it the responsibility of the Harbour Master to retrieve their boat? Their mistake, their boat...surely their problem?? Who pays the harbour master - is it the taxpayer again??
