UPDATE 5.46PM: State Highway 2 at Tahawai, north of Katikati, has reopened following a crash at the intersection of Tuapiro Road earlier today.

Police would like to thank motorists for their patience and cooperation while the road remained closed.

The highway was closed between Kauri Point Road and Tuapiro Road following an earlier crash when a car hit a powerpole at the intersection of Tuapiro Road.

A detour has been in place and motorists advised to follow directions of emergency services.

One person appears to have moderate injuries and has been taken to Thames Hospital.

PowerCo is reporting there are still 202 properties without power following a power cut that affected 621 properties at 11.45am when the car struck the powerpole, bringing powerlines down.

The crash happened near the Orchard House Cafe on SH2, with a SunLive reader reporting that staff were attending the scene to help.

"The truck which managed to stop just in time in front of the powerlines near the accident has quite a powerful message on the back of it. We don't believe the message on the truck is relevant to the driver of the crashed vehicle though," says a SunLive reader at the scene.
"The main power line was across the highway going to Tuapiro Road, so the highway was closed for a few hours."

UPDATE 12.41PM: State Highway 2 at Tahawai, north of Katikati, is likely to be blocked for several hours following an earlier crash at the intersection of Tuapiro Road.

One person appears to have moderate injuries and has been taken to Thames Hospital.

Diversions are in place off the highway at Kauri Point Road.

Motorists are asked to avoid travelling in this area if possible.
