New bus shelters popping up around Tauranga

New bus shelters are being added to about 140 bus stops across the city over the next 18 months to provide seating, weather protection, and increased safety and security for bus passengers.

Tauranga City Council is upgrading the stops to make it easier and more pleasant for people to use city bus services.

Transport director Brendan Bisley says public transport is essential to cater for Tauranga's growth by providing people with more convenient commuting options. It also helps people who can't drive, such as the elderly, young people and people with disabilities, to get involved in social and economic activities around Tauranga.

'A local rest home manager told us recently that residents had been asking for a bench at the bus stop on their stretch of road, so they were very pleased to see Council adding a new bus shelter.”

Some of the areas to benefit from these new shelters include Pāpāmoa, Mount Maunganui, Pyes Pā, Welcome Bay, the Avenues, Gate Pā, city centre, Ōtūmoetai and Bethlehem.

Shelters!!!!

Calling these structures "shelters" is a misnomer as they do not protect users from wind, rain or sun. They are open to all the elements, and have untinted glass which magnifies the effect of the sun. They also only have seating for 2 or 3 people, which with the extremely limited and, at times, non-existent bus service often means standing room only. The current bus shelters are vandalised, vomited on and used as rubbish bins on a regular basis, so I expect the new ones to be, in a very short space of time, just as unusuable.

Better than no seats and no shelter but I get peanuts point. I would use buses more if the timetables and transfers were better co ordinated and reliable. I frequently used the old route one as it did everything I wanted. Sadly the current routes and the extra time to transfer makes them unsatisfactory so I'm back in my car to go to the hospital and the hotpools. Town no need anymore.
