Gold just out of reach

Tauranga Boys' College missed out on winning gold after being defeated by Gore High School in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Pairs championships.

The indoor bowling tournament was played at The North Wellington Indoor Bowls Hall, in Wellington on Monday.


Sheldon Bagrie-Howley and Chris Johnstone from Gore High School won the gold medals in the pairs at the tournament.

In the final they defeated Jacinta Frost and Sharena Holgate (Stratford High School) 10-4.

Bagrie-Howley was named the player of the tournament having finished third equal in the Secondary School Singles yesterday.

This was the third year in a row that he has skipped the champion pairs combination.

In the semi-finals Frost and Holgate defeated Joshua Saywell and Nash Smith, Tauranga Boys College 7-6 on an extra end while Bagrie-Howley and Johnstone defeated Stefan McCartain and Nathan Arlidge, Tauranga Boys College 17-3.

Saywell and Smith won the bronze medals when they won the playoff against McCartain and Arlidge 11-8.

28 pairs entered the championship.
