Excitement is high with both the Black Ferns Sevens and All Blacks Sevens in tonight's finals of the HSBC New Zealand Sevens at FMG Stadium in Hamilton.

The All Blacks won 10 to 5 against Ireland in the quarterfinal and crushed France in the semifinal with a 38 to 0 win. Their final will be played against Argentina at 7.56pm.

On Saturday home-town success rewarded a colourful crowd of more than 17,000 fans during an action-packed Day 1 of the tournament.

The Black Ferns Sevens and All Blacks Sevens booked their respective places in the women's and men's Cup quarterfinals with three wins apiece during pool play.

The Black Ferns Sevens played Japan in the quarterfinals at 10.36am on Sunday, while the All Blacks Sevens met Ireland in their quarterfinal at 12.04pm.

HSBC NZ Sevens Tournament Director Craig Morton says the opening day had set the scene for a thrilling finish to the weekend.

'The Brian Perry stand has sold out for both days and it was great to see the local community come out in force to support the tournament. The teams feed off the energy of the fans and with an even bigger crowd coming in for Day 2 I think we're set for a memorable occasion to mark the end of this chapter for the tournament in Hamilton.”

Waikato Police reported no major incidents on Saturday and a well-behaved crowd in the R18 Festival Zone on Mill Street and 37 South Managing Director and Tournament Promoter Dallas Fisher says there was a festive and celebratory atmosphere around the venue.

'Selling out the main stand reinforced the Waikato community's support for sevens and it was great to see young families enjoying the rides at Willoughby Park. There were good vibes and energy flowing between the East Stand and the Festival Zone on Mill Street. The tournament has something for everyone,” says Dallas.

The Black Ferns Sevens posted convincing wins over Papua New Guinea (58-0), Fiji (27-0) and Great Britain (20-0), while the All Blacks Sevens kept Tonga scoreless (45-0), overcame Australia (21-9) thanks to a late try by Roderick Solo, and beat Great Britain (19-12) to round out a successful day for the home teams.

With a solid start on the pitch today, Black Ferns Sevens Head Coach Cory Sweeney is now looking to build on the team's performance tomorrow in the play-offs.

'To take the field in front of a home crowd was awesome, we really felt the support from fans and can't wait to get back out there.”

All Blacks Sevens Head Coach Clark Laidlaw felt "a real buzz" at FMG Stadium, and thanked the fans for showing their support on Day 1.

'We had some really tough opponents today [on Saturday], especially the match against Australia. We are looking to continue our performance into Day 2."

The vocal and visible presence of Fijian fans also propelled their women's and men's teams into the Cup quarterfinals where they will meet USA and Argentina respectively.

Results will be crucial to the HSBC World Sevens Series standings where the Black Ferns are tied at the top of the ladder with Australia and the All Blacks Sevens poised in a tie for third place with the USA, just three points adrift of leaders Samoa and South Africa.
