Police issue warning to unlicensed bike riders

Police are urging unlicensed dirt bike riders to stick to farmland or motocross tracks.

Unlicensed or unregistered motorbike riders could potentialy face a $150 fine or risk losing their bike if they are caught riding in public places.

This warning comes following an increase in unlicensed riders on unregistered dirt bikes, without helmets or protective clothing, riding in public places in the Bay of Plenty.

Senior Sergeant Megan Te Aho says riders are frequently found travelling on roads and footpaths at excessive speeds throughout Kawerau, Ōpōtiki and Whakatāne and frequently fail to stop for police when signalled to do so.

She says this is very unsafe and can lead to a fatal crash.

Police will be stopping and forbidding these riders to drive their motorbikes until they obtain a motorbike driver's license.

Riders should also stay away from public areas.

The infringement fine for riding in public spaces such as parks, reserves and footpaths is $150.

Police will look to enforce this and impound motorbikes if riders continue, which leads to a Driving Whilst Forbidden charge in court.

'This is not a way that most of these young people envisage the start of their driver license journey.

'Police implore parents to help with this issue and stop their children riding dirt bikes around the streets.

'Unless you have a driver's license, please only ride your bike on farmland and purpose-built dirt bike tracks such as the Awakaponga Motocross Track at Manawahe.

'Safer roads whanau, for us all.”

What about Lime scooters (and other scooters)?? People riding these things everywhere, footpaths, roads, no helmets nothing! They just get left lying across footpaths etc. What about people in wheelchairs, mobility scooters who can't get past. Blind people who can't even see them lying across the footpath! Get real! Either target them as well or continue to look ridiculous! Sick of it!

the police can issue all the warnings in the world. it won't make the slightest bit of difference to these hoons. if they ge t caught only minimal fine which probably won't be paid anyway

How about as well as dealing with war clowns maybe they start looking at the excessively loud piece of s**t Harley’s that rip up and down Gloucester Rd Mt Maunganui at obviously illegal speeds!

Being used as copy cat (no brain to think for themselves) drug runners like they do in Auckland. Fine them a pathetic $150 (bit loathsome to even call that a fine) and the gangs will pay it for their brainless little wannabes, confiscate the bikes and again the gangs will just replace it. For those that are non-gang/drug affiliated, get a brain before you have an accident and lose whatever little you have left. Could almost guarantee no rego, wof or plates, therefore no insurance thereby showing just how thoughtless, brainless and self-centered they are. dumbkof2 is right. They couldn't careless because the Governments have given birth to a generation without responsibility, without care, without integrity.
