Stan Meads cup semi-finals on Saturday

The business end of the season in the Stan Meads Cup has arrived, with the Cup and Bowl semi-finals being fought out on Saturday afternoon.

Defending champions Te Awamutu posted an unbeaten record in section one and will play the section two runner-up, at home in the Waikato.

The post section encounter against Western Bay of Plenty should be a cracker, with the game having an extra edge with the Peace Cup (Challenge trophy) on the line, for the last time in the 2012 competition.

Te Awamutu ran up a perfect record defeating Central and Eastern Bay of Plenty and Thames Valley B.

However the match-up with the Eastern Bay side was an absolute thriller, with the title holders getting home by just two points to post a 26-24 victory.

Mikade Pesenimo was the star of the show for Te Awamutu running in three tries.

The Western Bay team have their sights firmly set on the Peace Cup and a berth in the Grand Final, to be played at Te Awamutu the following weekend.

Western Bay last played for the Peace Cup nearly a decade ago and team management are set on returning home with the time-honoured trophy in their possession.

Te Awamutu will need to keep a wary eye on Western Bay winger Richard Nauer who grabbed his fifth touchdown of the competition last weekend.

The surprise package of the 2012 edition of the Stan Meads Cup has been Piako, who were the last team to confirm their participation this season.

The side centred on Morrinsville with support from Cambridge and Matamata, also posted an undefeated run in the round robin competition.

They will host Eastern Bay of Plenty in Morrinsville with the game kicking off at 2pm.

Eastern Bay booked their place in the semi-finals, when they won the Bay of Plenty local derby and Te Hurinui Apanui Shield defeating Central (Rotorua) Bay 31-17 in round three. Both sides will take accurate goal kickers into the encounter, with Sam McCloud in good form for Piako while Eastern Bays Te Amo Wilbore can punish opposition mistakes at will.

The Stan Meads Bowl will see Central host King Country B with Thames Valley B travelling to Hamilton to play the home side.
