Tauranga cyclist’s plea to share the road

A Tauranga cyclist is becoming increasingly concerned with 'inconsiderate driving” he has witnessed while riding through the city.

Keen peddler Adrian Toft first started his cycling journey about a year-and-a-half ago to get his fitness up.

He typically will ride during weekends, but says he has been cycling in and around Tauranga at 'various times” during all days of the week.

Adrian says during his fitness journey he has seen a large amount of poor behaviour, near misses and even was 'blamed” for being hit by a car in Mount Maunganui.

'Last week at about 6pm a girl was turning right into the Queen Elizabeth Centre and literally cut straight in front of me, so I ended up riding straight into the side of her car.

'Normally I just think ‘accidents happen' but her father actually got out of the car and was blaming me for the incident, taking no responsibility whatsoever.”

Adrian says another time, himself and some fellow cyclists were heading down Fraser Street when a car swerved at them 'as a warning”.

'It skimmed all of us and would have caused a huge accident. You talk to numerous people who have had countless near miss experiences. There are a lot more bikes on the road now, and Tauranga City Council is obviously trying to get more people on bikes with the new cycle lanes.

'Prior to cycling, I was a lot less aware of bikes on the road. So I guess that's my main goal – to highlight the need for more consideration for cyclists on the road.”

Adrian has lived in Tauranga for more than 20 years, and in that time he has witnessed the roads 'get a lot busier” in regards to both bikes and cars.

As a result, he and his cycling friends tend to stay away from main roads, and go for areas with designated cycle lanes when they can.

'The Cameron Road cycle lane is a bit of a shocker at the moment. You're in the cycle lane one moment, on the footpath the next, then in a small lane with the cars. It's far from ideal right now but I suppose that's part of the roadworks going on at the moment. It's still a lot better than it was.”

On the flipside, Adrian says cyclists should also be more aware on Tauranga's roads.

'I've seen cycling groups where people are in twos and threes wide. Going down places like Oceanbeach Road, you can't go three people wide. Doing so is going to really frustrate drivers.

'I've spoken to both cyclists and drivers who become frustrated with sharing the roads. Unfortunately, that's the way it is now. The two are going to have to learn to be on the road together and be more aware of each other.”

Bay of Plenty road policing manager Inspector Stuart Nightingale says cyclists are 'very vulnerable road users” given the much lower protection they have in the event of a crash, compared to an occupant of a car.

To stay safe on the roads, Stuart says it is 'vital” cyclists wear appropriate riding safety gear.

'The road surface is not forgiving in a crash. Riders are much more vulnerable road users, so the more you can do to protect yourself – like wearing appropriate safety gear – the better.

'Cyclists and motorists need to take responsibility for themselves, and other road users. All road users should respect each other and be aware they each have responsibilities to uphold on the road.

'Please treat others on the road like they're your own family, we want everyone to make sure they get home safely.”

Follow the rules

Maybe cyclists should follow the road rules then, give way signs mean GIVE WAY, red means stop!! And pay road tax!!!

Whingers

Millions have been spent on cyclists lanes in Tauranga yet cyclists still cycle on the road, then then designated cyclists lane, still they ride on the pedestrian lane. I've had to get off walkways because cyclists don't give a stuff for pedestrians. Grow up people and consider others. Pack of whingers.

Cycling is dangerous!

"Bay of Plenty road policing manager Inspector Stuart Nightingale says cyclists are “very vulnerable road users” given the much lower protection they have in the event of a crash, compared to an occupant of a car." The facts are that for their own safety and especially the safety of their children cycles of any kind should not be allowed on or near any road or vehicle. If a child is in a vehicle they have to be in a special seat and belted in at all times and yet we see purpose made children's seats on bikes that offer no protection for the innocent child whatsoever. We also see cycles with the ability to carry more than one child at a time. If car drivers are so bad on the roads why would any cyclist expose their children to so much danger? Cyclists are fools to think otherwise.

I loathe cyclists

And the reason being, they will use every excuse and trick in the book to not come to a stop. They have brakes but refuse to use them, insisting that all other road users yield to them. The example given about a turning vehicle would have resulted in the oncoming car slowing or stopping to allow for the other car to cross ahead of them.... Never the case with the lycra brigade because they don't need to abide by any mandatory road rules.

Stop the anger

Thanks for the article and for the comments. Most cyclists also drive. I do. Most cyclists pay rates and so pay for the roads. We need to treat each other with respect. Every cyclist is usually one less car on the road. One less car creating slow traffic. You angry car drivers should thank anyone who chooses to cycle. Not abuse them.

I am the driver

I was the one driving and you've got this all wrong! I wasn't in the cycle lane to start with, you've mistaken my girlfriend for my father while he was at training so I think you should go to specsavers before you get back on your bike. Get your story straight next time mate. No one yelled at you.

Road tax..

Posted on 26-01-2023 13:46 | By fair game

totally agree with Helo1 regarding cyclists following the road rules, however I do object about the comment paying road tax. We pay road tax for 3 vehicles, and cycle for fitness in the weekend. All the cyclists we know own at least one vehicle.

cycling on footpath is illegal

Posted on 26-01-2023 14:08 | By Kauritatahi

One of the biggest issues with cyclists in this city is the frequent use of the footpath by cyclists both children and adults, which is in fact totally illegal, and dangerous to both the cyclists themselves, pedestrians, and motorists exiting driveways. As an offence under the Land Transport Act they can be fined or prosecuted. Cyclists in many cases are completely ignorant of the road (and footpath) rules, or don't care. Or worse, think they are 'saving the planet' so are above the law...... but poor me when they have (or cause) an accident and find that they are not invincible.

Vehicles and cyclists

As a professional bus driver I appreciate both sides of this argument. Driving behaviour around Tauranga is generally poor in my opinion. As a bus driver, I am always looking out for cyclists and giving them plenty of room, and just slowing down to their speed if it's not enough room to overtake safely. This, I feel, is probably a main reason for driver lack of consideration, there is too much impatience amongst road users. Accepting that the cycle lanes around Tauranga are far from ideal, I have witnessed some really poor and unsafe behaviour by cyclists, eg. not using cycle lanes where they are provided and hence putting themselves in more danger. Also, not following the road rules. I had a cyclist once berate me when he had turned blindly at a Giveway sign and the cycle lane was blocked by an open cardoor!

It is simply pointless and stupid...

... to encourage a war between cyclists and motor vehicles. All of us who use the roads may be in either of these categories at some time. Even if you're not, ALL road users have equal rights, as long as they observe the Law. Drivers should be defensively aware of cyclists. Cyclists should not be wobbling and swaying in front of cars, and ignoring traffic controls like lights and STOP signs. (If you want to be part of "traffic" then obey the rules.) And Council should not be spending a disproportionate amount of our money on making roads more suitable for skateboards and cycles. (It should be in proportion to usage...) Transport is a disaster, and until that is addressed and solved, we should not be expanding non-vehicular facilities on our roads.

Contribute then complain!

Posted on 26-01-2023 18:44 | By The Professor

When you pay towards the infrastructure through a cycle tax (road tax) then you can have a say. Cyclists have too much clout!! Then, when they get the infrastructure, they don't use it. Great example this morning....a cyclist using the road bridge obver the Wairoa River at Bethlehem......NOT the cycle bridge that cost us millions!! This behaviour needs to be dealt with by the Police via fines.....$100 should do it.

So so so bad

I’ve driven and cycled all over the world and NZ. Drivers in Tauranga unfortunately are the worst I’ve come across. They ignore the road rules, attempt to knock you off your bike and pull out in front of you all the time. The comments in this section are a clear warning of the unfortunate attitude of many in Tauranga. They think they are above the rules and law, and will go out of their way to cause harm. The fact that ‘let’s get reals’ comments have been posted by Sunlive shows that they endorse this attitude as well. Can you imagine this happening in Europe, or the US. PS if you are worried about the millions spent on cyclists. Just wait till you find out about the billions spent on cars.

Undoubtedly you're the safest person on the roads. I wouldn't have an issue with cyclists if they were excluded from the main roads around the country. Unfortunately, cyclists believe that their safety is the responsibility of every other person on the roads but themselves. We've spent millions on your hobby and get nothing but complaints from the few that feel entitled to more rights than other road users.

Your attitude towards alternative views is contemptible. Freedom of speech and opinion is being destroyed by apologists around the world, who believe that their opinion is the only one that should count. I make absolutely no apology for my opinion. As a professional driver of very large vehicles, I generally have few issues with motorists as they are easily identifiable and are generally fully aware of their surroundings. On one occasion at around 3am in the rain outside Whakatane, I very nearly ran over a cyclist, only avoiding them because I noticed the tiny reflectors of their pedals going up and down. Cyclist should be banned from major roads as they are on SH1 and some thought should go into banning cyclists from locking their feet onto the pedals, as this just encourages them to fail to stop.

"...The fact that ‘let’s get reals’ comments have been posted by Sunlive shows that they endorse this attitude as well." It shows no such thing. (Apart from how consistently UNinformed you are...) SunLive is providing a fair platform for ALL points of view; they certainly publish posts which they don't necessarily agree with. In a world of increasing wokeism and hypersensitivity, where offense is taken where none is intended, we are fortunate to have a voice that will publish fair comment from any side of an issue. It absolutely doesn't mean that the platform AGREES with the content. If you want agreement, argue with a mirror...
