NZ Police continue to support lead agencies across the North Island during severe weather conditions.

Police have assisted with traffic management and road closures throughout the Waitomo District after heavy rainfall has caused numerous slips, flooding, and damage to roads.

In Tauranga, a landslide has caused a house to collapse, and has also threatened other neighbouring properties, says a police spokesperson.

Resident in the area said he heard the rumble of the land coming down and "then screaming he ran out and did what he could to help he said its lucky no one died".

"Fortunately no one was seriously injured. Police have assisted with evacuations in the area," says police.

"There is widespread flooding across the Bay of Plenty, and roads have been heavily affected by slips.

"Police are asking those in areas experiencing severe weather to stay put and not attempt to travel on the roads, many of which are currently undriveable.

"Anyone required to evacuate will be contacted directly by Civil Defence or emergency services staff."

SH29 is closed between SH28 and Ruahihi Rd, reports Tauranga City Council.

"Avoid this route or delay your journey if possible."

Diversions are in place and are as follows:

Westbound traffic to Matamata, Hamilton or Waikato: follow SH36 south (towards Rotorua) from Tauranga for 48km to SH5. Turn right and follow signs to Matamata or Hamilton. Tauranga bound traffic, from SH29 west side of the Kaimai Range, use SH28/Rapurapu Road, after 16km turn left to SH5, after 36km follow signs to Tauranga via SH36. Auckland traffic use SH2 via Katikati, Waihi and Paeroa.

The Historic Village in Taurnaga is also closed due to surface flooding.

"Our City Waters team is on location assessing the situation, and we are working closely with affected business residents."
