UPDATE 5.09PM: State Highway 36, between Tauranga and Rotorua, is now open.
People are advised to expected delays and drive to the conditions.
UPDATE 1.35PM: Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on State Highway 36, Hamurana.
The crash was reported at 12.19pm.
Initial reports indicate one person is in a critical condition, says a police spokesperson.
"The road is currently closed and there are no diversions available.
"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and make alternate travel plans."
EARLIER:
A serious crash is blocking a major highway between Tauranga and Rotorua.
An alert from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says State Highway 36 is blocked in north of the intersection with Dudley Road.
The road is blocked in both direction.
"Follow directions of emergency services on scene and allow extra time for a detour."

Until they put a passing lane on that road. Feel sorry for those involved but I see people overtake on blind corners every week. Ridiculous there are no passing lanes on a major highway
