Tauranga Aero Club is flying goods to those in need in Napier, Wairoa and Gisborne – and they are calling for more donations of essential supplies.
It's a collaborative initiative set up by the entire club, which is showcasing the community spirit in Tauranga, after locals have dropped off "already about two planes worth" of goods this morning.
Despite already having a room full of goods, chief flight instructor James Churchward says he has one simple message for community members able to help.
"I just want people to know they can bring stuff along, and don't stop."
"It's incredible to see what people have brought down. We put a Facebook post up at about 11pm last night and people have been rocking up with stuff since 8am today."
James says the Bay of Plenty had "gotten off light" with Cyclone Gabrielle, and is ready to use the full capabilities of Tauranga Aero Club to help those in need.
"We have a lot of members here with aircrafts. One member has enabled us to use his multi-engine Golden Eagle, which is able to hold about 450kg worth of stuff.
"We're also really close to the areas which need help, we can be down to the flood impacted areas in about an hour."
The club has been in contact with both the Gisborne and Napier mayor according to James, and also has the logistics set up to start dropping off goods in those areas.
Wairoa has been a struggle for the club to contact, and despite runway conditions not being the best, James is sure the club can get a small plane full of goods to land there too, even without prior contact.
He adds the club also has access to trucking firms, so once the Waioeka Gorge opens, the club can start "loading up trucks" to send to Gisborne along with the aircrafts.

With the first plane set to leave within the hour, flight instructor Sky Davies says since putting out the call, the club has had "non stop calls" of keen community members and businesses asking how they can donate.
"Within an hour of opening up we had a lot of stuff dropped off. It's really incredible," says Sky.
"We're expecting the donations to keep pouring in all day. If we can encourage people to keep going that's even better.
"The pilots are going to keep dropping off stuff until there's nothing left, so it really is the more the better."
James adds excluding couches and other large items, the amount of essential goods the pilots can take is "limitless".
Tauranga Aero Club is flying the following items to flood affected communities:
- UHT (Long life milk)
- Canned food
- Nappies
- Sanitary products
- Toilet paper
- Blankets
- Clothing & Footwear
- Pet Food
- Torches & Batteries
- Care packages
People can drop off the above essential items to Tauranga Aero Club located at 240 Aerodrome Road, Mount Maungaui, until 8pm tonight.
James says the club will also be open Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm for those who wish to bring goods over the weekend.

Civil Defence has made it very clear NOT to donate goods. They can't deal with them at the other end. Please listen to the experts. https://facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02hdRF2hWttsgp5g2EgiPQHA3ndyZ5qB3BrcEERrP9mQ7ttCWWh9cPKbKT76VBWNwal&id=100064939110574&mibextid=Nif5oz
