Tauranga's proposed $150 million courthouse is inflation's latest victim.
The Tauranga Moana Innovative Courthouse project is now under review, after facing 'significant” inflationary cost pressures and supply constraints.
Although there has been 'no change” to the project's objective of a new courthouse for Tauranga, cabinet is now being provided with delivery options for the new courthouse.
Ministry of Justice deputy secretary of corporate and digital services Tina Wakefield says the decision on the building will be taken by cabinet 'later this year”.
The building, first proposed in 2019, has cost around $27 million so far.
This, according to the Ministry of Justice, covers acquisition and clearance of the site, business case development, and design.
Tauranga's new courthouse is set to be built on 27 McLean Street, which is 6,374 square metres of land acquired by the Government at a cost of $19.504 million.
Tina says the work being done to provide information about options for progressing the project does not mean it is 'starting again”.
'The Ministry is still planning for a new courthouse to be built on the new site.”
Tina adds the Ministry of Justice expects to provide further information 'after Cabinet has considered the detailed business case later this year”.
In 2019, the new courthouse project was aimed at 'rethinking traditional courthouse design” which has been labelled 'alienating and distressing” by victims, according to then Justice Minister Andrew Little.
The facility was first expected to be opened in mid-2025. Post Covid-19, the courthouse was expected to be completed by 2026.
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson confirmed to SunLive the latest review has not put the project on hold.
