Police are now confirming the names of people deceased following Cyclone Gabrielle.
Nine people died when the powerful cyclone swept down from the tropics bringing wind, rain and devastation to communities across the North Island. Two more people died in circumstances related to Cyclone Gabrielle, taking the toll to 11.
The biggest known loss of life was in Hawke's Bay, where rivers burst their banks and sodden land gave way, sweeping young and old to their deaths.
There was also loss of life to the north, in Tai Rāwhiti, while two volunteer firefighters paid the ultimate price for their service to the community when a landslide came down on a stricken home in the Auckland beach community of Muriwai.
Police can now confirm the name of the person located deceased in Crownthorpe on Saturday 18 February 2023, following Cyclone Gabrielle was 43-year-old Brendan Lewis Miller.
Police can now confirm the name of the person located deceased in Waiohiki on Friday February 17 2023, following Cyclone Gabrielle. He was 76-year-old Ian McKenzie McLauchlan.
Police can now confirm the name of the person who died in hospital in Hawke's Bay on Thursday February 16 2023, was 65-year-old George Charles Luke.
Police can now confirm the name of the person who died at their home in Onekawa in circumstances related to Cyclone Gabrielle on Thursday February 16 2023. She was 86-year-old Helen Street.
Police can now confirm the name of the person located deceased in Putorino on Wednesday February 15 2023, following Cyclone Gabrielle. She was 58-year-old Shona Leslie Wilson.
Police's thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of Brendan, Ian, George, Helen and Shona.
Their deaths have been referred to the coroner.
