Firefighters are currently working to extinguish a fire at the waste management facility at Truman Lane, Mount Maunganui.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Hayley Saunders says fire was alerted to the incident at 3.47pm.

"There was about a 5 x 10 metre fire inside a recycling area," says Hayley.

"We are still on scene currently working to extinguish the fire."
