Tauranga City Council contractors are working to repair the accessway at Omanu Beach following its collapse and damage this week.

The wooden walkway leads from the main public carpark at Omanu down to the beach below and was damaged as a result of a heavy rain event over Sunday night and Monday morning.

'Our contractors started work to repair the accessway today, and we hope to restore access as soon as possible,” says Tauranga City Council spaces & places operations manager Warren Aitken.

Warren says people are asked to take care around this access point until repairs are complete.

'It's always a good idea to be extra vigilant around beach access sites after any extreme weather event, and to report any damage to us so we can respond.”

The nearby beach accessway from the Omanu Surf Life Club is undamaged, so the volunteer lifeguards are not affected nor have been prevented from being able to easily access the beach and run patrols.
