Police nab wanted man in Paeroa

The police Eagle helicopter was used in the apprehension of the man.

A wanted 27-year old man is in custody after being spotted in Paeroa.

'Police responded to a number of incidents in Paeroa, Hauraki at about 9.30am (Sunday) that resulted in a person of interest being sought,” says a police spokesperson.

Asked what the incidents that attracted police attention were, a spokesperson says there had been two sightings of the man, who had warrants for his arrest.

State Highway 2, and local roads were closed while 'several” police units and the Police Eagle helicopter searched the area.

The man was tracked to a Puke Rd, Paeroa, property.

The Eagle monitored his movements as police made contact with the man, says police.

The 27-year-old was taken into custody without incident.

A woman who lives nearby said the police were out in force, some with pistols, and were standing guard at various points on the road.

The road was blocked and several officers armed with rifles stood outside a property after putting down spikes on the drive, she says.

She says the dog and handler went over the house's back fence, while other police ran in the front.

A man was brought out, cuffed and taken away.

She says the whole incident was over in about one-and-a-half to two hours.

Police had warned earlier that delays were likely after the temporary closure of State Highway 2.

The highway had reopened by 12pm but traffic took some time to clear.
