9am update: A 23-year-old man is due to appear in Hamilton District Court today charged with murder following the death of a woman in Ngāruawāhia on Wednesday night.

Police were called to reports of a serious assault at a Cavan Street address shortly before 9.0pm.

Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

Earlier, 6.45pm: Police have taken a person into custody following a death on Wednesday evening.

A person has died following an incident in Ngāruawāhia.

Shortly before 9.30pm Police responded to a report of a serious assault at a residential address in Cavan Street, Ngāruawāhia

A person was located deceased in the residence.

One person has been taken into custody and charges are being considered.

Police say enquiries in to the circumstances of the incident are underway and further information will be released proactively when it is available.
