Pensioners are set to have more cash in their back pocket next month following the Government's announcing a boost to Superannuation as part of a new cost-of-living package on Monday.
The income boost will happen automatically from April 1, so recipients don't need to do anything.
The first payment in April will be partly-paid at the new rates, as April 1 falls on a Saturday, which is partway through the pay period.
The full increase will kick in for the second payment, either April 10 if you receive your pension weekly, or April 24 if you receive it fortnightly.
Superannuation will rise by 7.22 per cent in line with inflation. This will see a couple who are both aged 65-plus receive $102.84 more in total a fortnight and a single person living alone receive an extra $66.86 each payment.
From Monday, April 3, recipients can check their new payments either by logging into MyMSD or calling the Service Express self-service line on: 0800 333 030.

You think inflation is 7.2%, ha, have I got a bridge to sell you.
Why?

Why does it take an upcoming election to help our older members of society and our communities. It's an absolute disgrace. Is this truly the 'golden years' they looked forward to? The well paid Politicians (the Commissioners spring to mind as well for some reason) living in the lap of luxury while our pensioners, some who fought for our freedom, struggle and strive to keep their heads above poverty and alas . . . some are even sleeping in cars . . .
I Am

I am REALLY disgusted by this. That for our pensioners this all the Government can come up with. What a disgrace. Perhaps our pensioners should go on strike for more pay and better conditions as taught by our hard done by teachers and others.

As a person who actually lives on the Superannuation, I am grateful we get anything. All my life I took responsibility for my own survival but I am very glad to be a beneficiary of the pension. I know, we pay a lifetime of Taxes but that would be necessary whether we got Super or not. I don't EXPECT other people (including the Government) to support me in old age, but I am very pleased that they do. I certainly couldn't make ends meet without it. As for going on strike... never done that in my life and too old to start now. Besides, would anybody notice if pensioners went on strike? :-) You can bet I'll use the increase for wild partying and riotous living... BTW, after 17 weeks, I am getting the surgery I need tomorrow. Lucky to be still here, but glad as well. :-)

Well if superannu Well if supernatants went on strike I suggest a lot of volunteer work and charities would very soon stop. But as you say wouldn't happen anyway

I agree a strike from this sector of society wouldn't happen. Most of our pensioners are too professional for that. It would certainly get people's attention though . . . A big group of oldies on walking frames setting off down the road to Jan Tennettis office :-) All the very best for your surgery morepork and I wish you a speedy and successful recovery.
