Firefighters are at the scene of a large fire in Whakamarama.

"There is a large building fire on Turner Road, Whakamarama," says Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Josh Pennefather.

The fire service were alerted to the fire around 8pm.

"We are in attendance and have four fire trucks at the scene."
