Driver allegedly flees from police on foot

UPDATE: Police are on the hunt for a driver who allegedly fled from them in Mount Maunganui.

A police spokesperson says police responded to a fleeing driver incident in Mount Maunganui about 11.40am.

"A vehicle failed to stop for police when signalled to do so on Oceanbeach Road.

"The vehicle was not pursued, instead police deployed road spikes which safely brought the vehicle to a stop on Gardenia Drive.

"The driver then fled the scene on foot."

Police say enquiries are ongoing to locate the driver.

EARLIER:

A large police presence has been spotted in Mount Maunganui this afternoon.

A SunLive reader has emailed in to say there are police at Arataki Beach access "looking for bad guys".

"There were eight cop cars down the road."

The reader says they are looking on a beach for someone.

People are advised to report any suspicious activity to police.
