Work to improve access to Tauranga City's waterfront has seen an 85 tonne culvert lifted into place near the Matapihi rail bridge.

A total of $94.8 million has been allocated for the development of the city centre waterfront, with many projects earmarked for completion before the end of June 2024.

In a post on its website, Tauranga City Council says redevelopment of the waterfront will 'complement the new civic precinct”.

'We are progressing many projects including the upgrade of Dive Crescent carpark, the upgrade of Beacon Wharf, and a new coastal connection and boardwalk along the waterfront between the city centre and Elizabeth Street.”

In a post on its Facebook page, council says 'another exciting milestone for the transformation of our city centre”.

'The jazz festival wasn't the only successful event to take place in the city centre over Easter, with the railway underpass culvert installed at the southern end of The Strand over the long weekend.

'The 85 tonne culvert was safely lifted into place in the early hours of Saturday morning, after bad weather in January meant its installation was postponed until this next possible window.

'The underpass will be completed later this year and in time will provide a link to a new boardwalk into the city centre; just one of the many exciting projects underway so people can enjoy our waterfront and connect with Te Awanui Tauranga Harbour.”

Its a hundred or so meters to the rail crossing on the strand and we spent how much to make a short cut. They are mad down there.

How about

Eight million dollars ? It's about time the council started to ask those ratepayers that think the town needs this type of unnecessary spending , to actually front up and pay for it. That would soon sort out those that are happy to waste other peoples money but not theirs!

WHY?????

Why are the Commissioners/TCC Management spending any money at all on 'improvements'? As long as they have the insanely disgusting parking charges that they've 'brought back in', the dead centre will be permanently dead. No need for any $$$$ spent there will be no-one in the CBD, there's precious few people now and they are being HAMMERED with parking fees. Insane, disgusting fees. Read the popsts in the Facebook 'Mount Maunganui Notice Board' page. If you are going to spend all this money, have all the disruption, then at least have the commonsense to have completely free parking, everywhere, to stop the CBD dying completely in the meantime.
