Construction on island infills and kerbing for the roundabouts along Maunganui Road commences this week.

This kerbing will take place from Wednesday April 19 to Friday April 21. Traffic travelling on Maunganui Road will be unaffected, however, the entries onto Maunganui Road from Sutherland Road, Puriri Street and Matai Street will be closed while these works are underway.

To enable safe works on kerb extensions at pedestrian crossings, some carparking may be closed on Maunganui Road.

Speed has been a long-standing concern on Maunganui Road which impacts on the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

Safety improvements and road upgrades made last year aim to create a calmer, more predictable environment, significantly boosting safety for everyone who travels through the area.

To finish safety improvements in the area, work continues in April.

Work is planned at the following locations on or near Maunganui Road:

Progress on Matai Street. Photo: Supplied.

Golf Road to Tui Street: the work in front of Mount Maunganui College is progressing well. Trees have been installed this week.

Hinau Street to Sutherland Avenue: work will continue in this section over the next few weeks.

The team continue to work on remaining splitter islands at Matai Street, Puriri Street and Sutherland Avenue, as well as final pram crossings and remaining paths.

Other work scheduled for this section includes:

  • Replacement of the temporary painted roundabout at Hinau Street intersection with a permanent dome
  • Planting of trees and greenery
  • Lifting the shared path around at the corner of Puriri Street/Sutherland Avenue roundabout.

Tui Street to Hull Road: the team are currently drafting plans for this section of Maunganui Road. Local business owners and the local community will be contacted for input and feedback as the draft plans are developed in the coming months.

How many times do they have to close the streets, just for a bit of infill which should have been done months ago. Shadow1
