Tauranga homicide: 10th accused in court

Police are continuing to investigate the death of Tauranga man Mitchell Te Kani at a Maungatapu Road address on May 14, 2022.

A Tauranga man facing a charge of murder in relation to the death of Mitchell Te Kani will next be in court later this month.

Witaiawa Robinson, aged 25, appeared in Tauranga District Court today after being arrested as part of a homicide investigation.

Police were initially called to reports of a disorder at a residential address in Maungatapu on May 14, 2022.

Upon arrival, officers found Mitchell's body and a subsequent homicide investigation was launched.

Over the last year, police have arrested nine other people - eight men and one woman - and charged them with murder. They had so far pleaded not guilty to a joint charge of murder.

In a statement to media on Wednesday, Detective Inspector Craig Rawlinson announced the 10th arrest.

Robinson is facing one count each of murder, assaults with intent to injure, intent to injure with reckless driving, and two charges of wounds intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He also facing a separate charge of arson in an incident involving a motor vehicle on March 11, 2023.

During his brief court appearance today, Robinson waved to his family from the dock.

He is next due in court at the Tauranga High Court on May 24 in relation to the murder charge, and May 15 on the charge of arson.

Police are continuing to appeal for information about Mitchell Te Kani's death and urge anyone with information that may assist to call 105 and quote file number 220515/3688.
