On this day in 1936 the New Zealand National Party was founded. In 1995 on this day Team New Zealand beat Team Dennis Conner 5-0 to win the America's Cup for the first time. Few New Zealanders in 1995 could have avoided television commentator Peter Montgomery's famous line, ‘the America's Cup is now New Zealand's cup!'

The Bay of Plenty IRB Long Haul is celebrating its 10th anniversary today with a race from Ohope Beach to Mount Maunganui. There are 25 teams competing in the 2023 Stage Race, which sets off from Ohope Beach at 9am with location tasks set at Thornton Beach, Matatā, Pukehina, Papamoa, Omanu and concluding around 3pm at Mount Maunganui.
