Emergency services are responding to a multiple vehicle crash on Takitimu Drive between Chapel Street and Elizabeth Street.

A police spokesperson says police were alerted to the incident at about 2.20pm.

"Four people were treated for minor to moderate injuries. Three have been taken to hospital."

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says the crash is "southbound" and traffic is reduced to a single lane.

"Major congestion forming, tailing back over the Harbour Bridge".

"Expect significant delays. Consider delaying travel or using alternate routes."
