SH2 open in Karangahake Gorge following crash

Update, 11.42am: Following an earlier crash, State Highway 2 through the Karangahake Gorge is now open.

Police say a 30km/h speed limit is operating while the barrier is assessed.

Motorists are advised to expect delays.

Emergency services responded earlier to a three-vehicle collision on State Highway 2, Waikino in the Karangahake Gorge. The crash was reported to Police at 8.20am.

"An earlier crash, near Seddon St in Waikino, has now been fully cleared with SH2 open through this area," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

Update, 9.52am: One lane is open following an earlier crash on State Highway 2, Waikino in the Karangahake Gorge.

"State Highway 2 is now operating to one lane with traffic management in place," says a police spokesperson.

"Motorists are advised to expect delays."

Update, 9.05am: Emergency services are currently responding to a three-vehicle collision on State Highway 2, Waikino in the Karangahake Gorge.

Police say the crash was reported at 8.20am.

"Initial reports suggest two people are in a moderate condition," says a police spokesperson.

"The road [SH2] is currently closed between Waitawheta Road and Campbell Road."

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take an alternate route.

A detour is in place:

Eastbound traffic: right to Waitawheta Rd, on to Frankton Rd, on to Victoria St, to return to SH2 in Waihi.

Westbound traffic: right to Campbell Rd, left to Waitekauri Rd, right to Old Waitekauri Rd to return to SH2 in Waikino.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."

Earlier, 8.49am: A SunLive reader says that a truck is on its side in the Karangahake Gorge following a crash with a car.

Waka Kotahi NZTA advise that State Highway 2 Waikino, between Waihi and Paeroa is closed in both directions.

"Due to a crash, near Seddon St in Waikino, SH2 lanes are blocked. Follow directions of response crews in the area."

SH2 is closed between Waitawheta Rd (Waikino) and Campbell Rd (Waihi).

A detour is in place:

Eastbound traffic: right to Waitawheta Rd, on to Frankton Rd, on to Victoria St, to return to SH2 in Waihi.

Westbound traffic: right to Campbell Rd, left to Waitekauri Rd, right to Old Waitekauri Rd to return to SH2 in Waikino.
