Child drowns at Memorial Park

Update, 12.50pm: The death of a child has been referred to the Coroner following police responding to an incident at the Memorial Park water fountain in Tauranga.

"At 9.50am a report was received of a drowning incident," says a police spokesperson.

Police say emergency services responded and a child was located unresponsive.

"CPR was commenced, but sadly the child was unable to be revived.

"Police's thoughts are with the child's family who have requested privacy at this difficult time."

Fencing has been erected at the Memorial Park fountain.

Tauranga City Council is asking that any enquires be directed to police.

"We're aware that there has been a tragic accident at Memorial Park this morning," say a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the affected family.

"Fencing is in place at the Memorial Park fountain and will remain there until a blessing can be performed.

"Any further enquiries should be directed to Police."

The death will be referred to the Coroner.

Earlier, 11.30pm Police and an ambulance are attending an incident at Memorial Park in Tauranga.

A SunLive reader at the park reports that police have cordoned off an area near the large water fountain.

"[The ice cream man] was setting up when the ambo and cops rushed in and parked next to him."

"Police are responding to an incident at Memorial Park in Tauranga," says a police spokesperson.

"Further information will be provided when available."

Another SunLive reader is reporting that access into the park has been closed off.

"Heaps of ambulance and police. Police [are] turning around everyone trying to go to the park. It's blocked off. Doesn't look good."
