SH2 reopens following serious crash at Pikowai

Update, 3.05pm: State Highway 2, Matata to Paengaroa has now reopened following a serious two-vehicle crash.

"Thank you for your patience," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash about 11.40am.

One person is seriously injured.

Update, 2.40pm: State Highway 2, Matata to Paengaroa remains closed due to a serious two-vehicle crash.

The Serious Crash Unit is currently finishing up their investigation, says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

Emergency services were alerted about 11.40am.Three ambulances, three fire appliances, a rapid response unit and a helicopter have been at the scene.

One person is reported to be seriously injured.

Motorists are advised to follow the directions of emergency services.

Westbound traffic detour via SH30 towards Awakeri, turn left on to Galatea Rd towards Murupara, right on to SH38 and continue on to SH5, right on SH30 toward SH33 to Paengaroa and then rejoin SH2.

Update, 1pm: Police are responding to a two-vehicle collision on State Highway 2 West, near Matata.

Emergency services were alerted about 11.40am.

At least one person is understood to have been seriously injured.

The highway is blocked and motorists should expect delays while emergency services work at the scene.

Earlier, 12.30pm Emergency services are attending the scene of a crash near Matata.

A SunLive reader is reporting that State Highway 2 is closed near Mimiha Road, at Pikowai.

It is unknown if there are any injuries.

Motorists are advised to delay their journey or take an alternative route.
