As a result of the detailed, methodical search undertaken, Police can confirm the total number of victims in the Loafers Lodge, Newtown fire on May 16 is five, says Acting Wellington District Commander Inspector Dion Bennett.

"Police have already released their names, and is offering support to their families.

"Our scene examination is continuing and is expected to extend into next week."

Before the fatal fire broke out, Loafers Lodge housed some of Wellington's most vulnerable and marginalised people living in real poverty with very few other housing options.

'It's not a first resort, it's a last resort,” says Major Christina Tyson, pastor at Salvation Army in Newtown.

When you do not have a lot of money, that's one of your options, particularly for single men, she says.

There were about 94 people in the lodge's 92 rooms at the time of the fire in Newtown.

Among them were nurses, 501 deportees, people on community sentences, a former refugee and people supported by community services.

A number of hospital staff were also residing at the lodge, according to Capital and Coast District Health Board. One source says some migrant nurses were using the accommodation.

Wellington Police have arrested a man in relation to the fire at Loafers Lodge and charged him with two counts of arson.

"Police acknowledge the victims," says Inspector Dion Bennett. "Kei nga mate koutou ra, haere ki te urupa o ratou ma, e moe okioki."
