Tauranga City set up a mouth-watering third-round tie against Northern League table-toppers Eastern Suburbs by sweeping aside Manukau United 6-0 in their rearranged Chatham Cup second-round clash this weekend.
A five-minute hat-trick from Jonty Bidois set City on their way to a memorable victory over the side a division above, leaving the visitors stunned in front of a healthy attendance at Links Avenue.
The game, postponed from King's Birthday weekend due to heavy rain, looked set to be a tight affair on paper, given Tauranga's promotion form in the NRFL Championship and Manukau's lowly position in the division above.
However, the Auckland side had no answer to City's swashbuckling attacking football with Bidois the spearhead.
The young striker headed home his first after 26 minutes before adding a second with a stunning long-range effort from just inside the centre-circle, catching Manukau goalie David-John Tuamoheloa off his line. The striker then tucked away his third before Colby Brennan's deflected cross made it 4-0.
Tauranga goalie Callum Glover, mostly a spectator for the day, produced a sensational reflex save to ensure the score remained that way at the halfway point, Tauranga's players receiving a standing ovation on their way back to the sheds.
The second half played out much the same, with City's strong defence the backbone for their rampant attack.
Brennan secured his brace with a low-driven drive before Adam Davidson made it six from the penalty spot to book Tauranga's place in the third round.
They will face a much tougher task in the next round, taking on current Northern League leaders Eastern Suburbs.
The Lilywhites are unbeaten this season and boast All Whites such as Francis de Vries and Kelvin Kalua among their roster but City will have high hopes of carrying their current form into the game and causing a major cup upset.
Tauranga City take on Eastern Suburbs in the Chatham Cup third round this Saturday, June 17 at Links Ave from 2pm.
Elsewhere across the Bay, Tauranga City's women's team defeated Otumoetai in their NRFL Women's Championship derby fixture at Fergusson Park - earning revenge for a defeat at Links Ave earlier this season.
Grace Duncan had given Oats an early lead but a brace from Abi-Witney Collins and one from Briana Osborne earned City a 3-1 triumph.
In the NRFL Men's Southern Conference, Papamoa beat Central BOP side Ngongotaha Lakes 2-1. Andrew Cooper and Nick Barnes scored the goals, ensuring a comeback win after Luke Barker had earlier given the home side the lead.
Otumoetai however continue to struggle, losing 5-1 to Cambridge at home.
Tauranga City's WaiBOP League One side fell to a surprise loss at West Hamilton this weekend, missing the chance to close the gap on leaders Otorohanga in the process. Two goals for Thomas Crane and one for Cameron Stewart were not enough as they lost 4-3 in a thriller at Mahoe Park.
Two Bay derbies took place in the WaiBOP W-League this weekend. Lakes FC beat Otumoetai 4-0 with Brooke Barclay at the double and Makenzie Kamo the unfortunate scorer of two own goals. Tauranga City Reserves and Tauranga Blue Rovers shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, Tauranga Blue Rovers got the better of Lakes FC in an all-Bay fixture, Paige Rickard again scoring the crucial goal in a 2-1 win.
