Thieves raid Michael Hill jewellery outlet

Police are investigating the smash and grab of a Mount Maunganui shopping centre

Police are making enquiries to locate those involved in the burglary of a jewellery store at Mount Maunganui.

The Michael Hill jeweller outlet at the Bayfair Shopping Centre has been raided in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police say they were called to a commercial burglary at Bayfair, Mt Maunganui on Girven Rd at around 3.40am.

A spokesperson says tools had been used to enter the store and the offenders had left the scene in a vehicle.

Enquiries to locate those involved are ongoing.

This comes after the store was the victim of an aggravated robbery on March 20, by three people who smashed their way through glass cabinets at around 5.50pm.

Within about 90 seconds the robbers had cleared jewellery from most of the cabinets, shoving it into bags, before running from the centre.

In that case, a 16-year-old male was arrested a few days after and was charged with aggravated robbery of the Michael Hill Jewellers at Bayfair.

Seriously, this Government, the Police and the courts must get tough on crime - from today!!! The softly softly approach we are currently using is not working......open up your eyes Labour (and the other parties). NZ is being steered by gangs and other criminals at the moment and it is getting worse by the week. Harden up and start dishing out lengthy custodial sentences and start severely punishing the lowlife which are embedded in our lives - it is not fair on the lay abiding, hard working taxpayer of this country!!

When the Labour party get voted out, I feel sorry for the new party having to go into major damage control. It will be difficult and time consuming to undo the mess.

This is just ridiculous.

It's like a time loop with no lessons being learned. I concur with The Professor and That's Nice in requiring that a firmer line be taken. The Law should be strengthened, and less weight should be placed on early childhood and family background. If your father was a waste of space who abused you, I'm sorry, and I hope you can get help to deal with it. But it doesn't give you a license to war on society. Don't try to introduce your history, your ethnicity, or your general neglect, as mitigating factors for your anti-social behaviour. Understand that you are ultimately responsible for what you do. It's not your social worker who goes to jail...
