Heavy rain warning for Coromandel, parts of BOP

MetService is issuing a heavy rain warning for the Bay of Plenty west of Te Puke and the Coromandel Peninsula.

The heavy rain warning for both areas is in place from 9am Thursday, June 22, to 3pm Friday, June 23.

A MetService spokesperson says to expect 120 to 160 mm of rain in addition to what has already fallen, with the largest accumulations likely about Coromandel Peninsula. Thunderstorms possible.

"Peak rates of 15 to 25 mm/h".

"Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous."

Area: The Ruahine Range, Kaweka Forest Park, and Hawke's Bay from State Highway 5 southwards

Valid: 63 hours from 9:00am Thu 22 Jun to 12:00am Sun 25 Jun

Forecast: A prolonged period of rain, which is expected to be heavy at times.

Expect 200 to 250 mm of rain to accumulate about the Ruahine Range and Kaweka Forest Park, 100 to 150 mm of rain about the remaining ranges including the coastal hills of Central Hawke's Bay, and lesser amounts elsewhere. These amounts are in addition to the rain that has already fallen. Peak rates of 10 to 20 mm/h.

Area: Tairawhiti/Gisborne

Valid: 75 hours from 9:00am Thu 22 Jun to 12:00pm Sun 25 Jun

Forecast: A prolonged period of rain, which is expected to be heavy at times.

Expect 250 to 350 mm of rain to accumulate about and north of Tolaga Bay, 150 to 200 mm of rain about the ranges farther south, and 50 to 100 mm of rain about coastal areas south of Tolaga Bay. These amounts are in addition to the rain that has already fallen. Thunderstorms possible. Peak rates of 15 to 25 mm/h.

Area: Eastern Marlborough south of Ward

Valid: 54 hours from 9:00am Thu 22 Jun to 3:00pm Sat 24 Jun

Forecast: A prolonged period of rain, which is expected to be heavy at times.

Expect 150 to 250 mm of rain to accumulate, with the largest amounts likely about the Kaikoura ranges. Peak rates of 10 to 20 mm/h.
